About Me

Hello! My name is Kory Leonard. My pronouns are he/they. I grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas and was born here. My current time zone is central which is 2 hours ahead of OSU's pacific time. I am currently in my second year of being an E-Campus student here at OSU. I currently major in psychology! 

From what I can recall, I have never taken a speech class before. I'm pretty sure I managed to get out of taking speech classes in high school by doing other classes instead. This means that this will be my first one. I do believe that communication is extremely important. It is complex and there are many ways we can communicate which I do find fascinating. We, as a society, rely on communication a lot. 

There are a lot of communication apps that I have used a few times before, but I have found myself using Discord a lot. I use it mainly because most of my friends are on there and it is pretty easy to navigate once you get the hang of where everything is or what they do. I have been using it since 2016. My username is larrytrainor, if anyone wants to friend me! I prefer this way of communicating not only because of my friends, but also because of the organization. There are servers, private DMs, group chats, video calls, and voice calls. You can also customize your profile freely, can screenshare with others (they have games as well), and so much more. 

Another form of communication I use is the good old messages app. I usually use this to communicate with my mom, sibling, grandparents, and some friends on there if needed. I also do use Twitter, TikTok, and Tumblr, but the only times you will see me communicating on there will be through the comments section or just retweeting/reblogging. I also use E-Mail to exchange files that are storage heavy or for professional purposes (School). 

Some facts about me are that I actually have 22 hens, 3 dogs, and 2 rescue opossums. I am also Deaf with cochlear implants. If anyone has any questions relating to my animals or me being Deaf with cochlear implants, I will gladly answer them! Do not worry about sounding ignorant, it happens if you are not informed about the topic.

Week 10 - Social Semiotics

As someone who is Deaf with cochlear implants, I rarely rely on auditory information, but rather visual information. I tend to take in more visual information more than others. I can remember my way back to the apartments I used to live in or the old house I used to live in from a little over a decade ago. This was because of visual information. Visual information is an extremely important part in helping me gain knowledge and is usually what I prefer to take in.  Social Semiotics is one example of analyzing visual information. Social semiotics was developed by a linguist, Michael Halliday, and contributed further by Gunther Kress. Week 8 - Communication Fallacies

It can be difficult to determine a communication fallacy and easy to fall for it when you are not paying attention. It can also be possible when you may not know what kind of fallacies are there and what you should look for. This can be seen in many articles and social media posts.  For example, @RealAlexJones on Twitter wrote a post stating that "If the statistical trend continues with this tragic event, there is a 98% chance the shooting is trans or gang related . If it is another trans wack job or a gang shooting , it will be out of the news in less than 24 hours.." There was not a single source listed about the statistics of trans or gang-related shooting. He also used the term "trans wack job" which seems like the post is transphobic. The video has not stated anything about the school shooter's identity (or mention of LGBTQ+ identity) due to the fact that they had no information. This would be an example of an appeal to ignorance fallacy.

WEEK 5 - Clooless Podcast

I personally have never been into podcasts. There are a number of reasons as to why I never liked them and one of the main reasons is that I am Deaf. I require more visual information than others (lips for me to read and captions). I also have ADHD and podcasts have never been able to hold my attention for more than a minute, however there is this one podcast called Clooless Podcast  that managed to do this. I am going to warn you though that this is not a family friendly podcast and is more of a "we're doing fun shenanigans" podcast. It is a podcast with four men (who are both YouTubers and Twitch streamers) called Puffer, Grizzy, Pezzy, and Droid.  Clooless Podcast's Logo Reflect on your overall listening experience.
